Alarms must be photoelectric and certified to AS 3786-2014. Older ionisation alarms don't count.

It lists where each alarm was installed, the brand and model, its manufacture and replace-by dates, and confirms every alarm was tested together before we left.
The sample uses made-up details. The certificate covers battery-powered alarms we supply and install. It isn’t an electrical certificate and doesn’t cover hardwired alarms.
One call-out fee covers the visit, installation and testing. You only pay for the alarms your home actually needs.
All prices include GST. Homes with existing hardwired alarms need a licensed electrician and are quoted separately.

The Queensland Government’s smoke alarm page sets out the final stage of the law: every existing house, townhouse and unit must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027, and registered caravans and motorhomes need a photoelectric alarm too.
